Research Grant Instructions

Institutions invited to apply for the full research grant will complete the attached full application. Enclose a Brief Biographic Summary (not complete curriculum vitae) for the principal investigator as well as any other investigators involved in the research project.

Grant Guidelines

Applicants are required to submit the following as part of their grant application package:
  • A completed grant application cover page
  • A detailed research proposal
  • Biosketches for all investigators
  • A statement listing other funding sources for the proposed or work or related projects with a brief description of the project and funding amount

Research Proposal Preparation

The research proposal portion of the application may not exceed 10 pages in length (excluding bibliography) and should include the following sections:
  • Objectives and Specific Aims (1 page)
  • Background and Relevance (1 page)
  • Preliminary Work (1 page)
  • Research Strategy (< 5 pages)
  • Timeline and Milestones (1 page)
  • Institutional Facilities and Support (1 page)
  • Budget and Justification (1-2 pages)

Selection Process

All invited full grant applications will be reviewed by the ISI Clinical Robotic Fellowship Grant Committee and scored on the following criteria:
  • Clarity of research goals and objectives
  • Novelty and innovation
  • Clinical relevance and value
  • Evidence of feasibility
  • Strength of evaluation methods and measures
  • Availability of required resources

Due to the expected volume of proposals, we regret that the committee will not be able to provide detailed individualized feedback for unsuccessful proposals. The content of each proposal will remain confidential at all times and will not be distributed beyond the Grant Committee.

Grant Conditions

  • Applicants may apply to fund a clinical research project or a project to support clinically-relevant technology development.
  • Applications to fund database research are not encouraged except in areas where there is limited published research.
  • Although this is a relatively new program, last year’s program was highly competitive.
  • ISI strongly encourages institutions who have not previously received funding from the company to apply.
  • Multiple grants will not be funded simultaneously to any principal investigator.
  • Multiple grants to the same institution for different principal investigators will be considered.
  • Awards must be used to fund research at academic institutions. Grants are not to be used to fund for-profit activities
  • In the case of technology development, IP terms and conditions may require negotiation.
  • Upon completion of the proposed research work, participants will be required to submit a final report detailing study results and conclusions.
  • Grantees will be invited to present their work at our headquarters in Sunnyvale, CA (travel costs covered by ISI)
